He Ate My Heart

9.04.2010

During my break at work yesterday, I walked downstairs to the coffee shop to treat myself to something sweet. As I was adding three packages of sugar to my overly-bitter hot chocolate, a complete waste of $3, I couldn’t help but hear a conversation taking place behind me. The man said something along the lines of, “To answer your question, even though most guys are disgusting, piggish…etc. etc. beings, not all guys are like this.” I had to giggle to myself because here’s this GUY talking about how horrible the male “species” is. Have no fear, though! Lucky for us, there are a handful of guys hiding in mall coffee shops who aren’t completely full of…well, you get my drift. Now we can all breathe easily.

The best part about this was the woman’s reaction to this. She was so passionate about the fact that all men are dogs that she nodded her head so profusely that I thought it might come undone from the rest of her body. Anyone who knows me well enough can tell you that I’m an intense believer in equality and opposed to an sort of degradation toward women. However, this does not mean that I’m “anti-male.” Perhaps this woman had her heart broken, as most of us have, or has had terrible experiences with men that I’ll never understand. I really want to give her some credit, but I couldn’t disagree with this conversation more. I’ve come across just as many mean women as I have men. It just kills me that people think this way, because if there are women with this attitude toward men, how many men do you think have this attitude towards women? I don’t know. These are all just passing thoughts. I don’t really have this complex, fully-developed argument about the struggles of gender roles. I’ve written enough essays about that topic to last me a lifetime. It just struck me as odd how different everyone’s points of view are when it comes to major topics, but I suppose that’s what makes us all so interesting.

And a side note, today marks two months since Caleb deployed. I miss him terribly, but we’re getting closer!

xoxoxo
